PRESS RELEASE
SUNDAY 16TH, JAN. 2000 SOCCER GAME: U.S. VS IRAN
As part of US/Iran Ping-Pong diplomacy, organizers have carefully orchestrated a soccer tournament in which Iranian soccer team will face USA national team.
Mission for Establishment of Human Rights in Iran (MEHR-IRAN) strongly supports the relation between the two nations but believes that Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) is not the representative of Iranian Nation. Twenty one years of gross violations of human rights, crimes against humanity, public stoning of individuals to their death, ongoing torture, extra-judicial and summary executions, legalized gender/religious apartheid and discrimination by Islamic regime of Iran can not be simply whitewashed with a soccer game.
In light of these facts, we emphasis our support for the USA/Iran relation but our strong opposition to any USA/IRI relation in which full observation of Human Rights in Iran is not a pre condition. To demonstrate this, we urge all soccer fans to remain seated and not to salute the IRI anthem, and instead sing our national anthem "Ey Iran" after saluting the USA national anthem. Banners displaying our opposition to the crimes of IRI and our effort to seek justice will be flown over Rose Bowl during the Sunday match.
Please take a stand with oppressed Iranian people, expose the human rights violations in Iran and plea to Islamic regime to free prisoners of conscience including jailed students leaders who are facing death squads while this match is taking place.
MEHR IRAN is a Human Rights group working for the rule
of law and a system of justice for protecting universal human rights in
world affairs in general and Iran in specific. MEHR is a volunteer organization
with no ties and affiliation to any political organization. For further
